United Nations Humanitarian Air Services
The 2004/5 tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean presented WFP with one oif its most logistically challenging operations to date: how to deliver food aid to remote areas where much of the infrastructure was damaged or destroyed. WFP launched two Special Operations:
The first provided essential logistics support, such as mobile storage tents, landing crafts/small boats, water purification units, a mine action team for Sri Lanka and a base camp for inter-agency needs in Banda Aceh. The second SO was designed to give air support to the regional operation, including teams to manage aid distribution at air terminals around the region and a passenger service to ferry humanitarian personnel around the region.
Tsunami prompted a massive response from the international communitry organizing flights to deliver humanitarian aid and assistance mainly to Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives.
